Installing HP CD-writer 8200 software By bfadero 18 years ago I have a user who has an external HP 8200 series CD-writer connected to the PC through a USB cable. You probably have a startup icon or runstart reg key that launches the hp direct CD system tray TSR. You could disable this as a work around. If it is in the startup folder just copy it to the desktop and launch it after the login process is complete. if it is in the runstart reg key you will need to back the registry up then go to hkeylocal machinesoftwaremicrosoftcurrent version runstart and remove the individual entry for the hp system tray software. The name of the .exe should give it away.
As to the reason that the system tray software is nuking your login and forcing you to reboot you'll probably need to look at HP's knowledge base for the reason. (If they've ever addressed it.) You also might want to look at rom bios updateor a patch to the direct cd software that HP offered with the CD-Rom. Hope that helps. :)
p.s. you can still start the service tsr by locating the exe for it and putting an icon on the desktop to launch it if you absolutly need the tray icon. I normally just run the software from the programs menu. does the job for me.
